The Robot Arm

Just a quick post to have something to start with. Here is the new robot arm, just got it moving. It is based off of http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2433 by jjshortcut. It is made from 1/8 inch aluminum cut out on my Taig CNC Mill. Halfway through cutting out the parts I had to stop and build an enclosure and flood coolant system for the mill but that's another post... It is controlled (currently) by a Wii Nunchuck connected to an Arduino which controls a Pololu Mini Maestro 12 servo controller.

  1. Wow, that looks *awesome*. I like the hardboard prototypes and all but a real metal robot arm looks super cool.

How did you do bearings at the joints? Plastic spacers like (I think) the original design used? Also, what kind of weight can it lift? I presume it's a bit "weaker" by virtue of having to lift the extra weight of the metal?

It's a really cool build and I love the use of the nunchuck.

  2. I used a small piece of nylon tube that just fits through the hole in the arm section. It is super glued on the other side of the servo from the servo horn. It actually seems to work pretty good and neither one has come off yet. If they break I'll come up with something better.

It actually seems pretty strong but I used fairly powerful servos with metal gears since I was planning on the extra weight. I have not tested the lifting capacity yet. I am working on using inverse kinematics with it right now but it is mostly just flailing around. I will load up the nunchuck script again and test that out when I have some time.

  3. I have been having problems with the thingiverse plans. They don't seem to play well with Inventor Pro 2012. Did you redo the designs, or do you have suggestion on how to deal with the scale problems

  4. I have a similar project, but I am running into trouble with the code. I was wondering if you would be willing to share your arduino code. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

  5. I'm doing the same arm, but the plans do not have measures, could you please share. Greetings from Costa Rica...
